Fear of Heart ExposureA business client who is part of a team coaching group, related her frustration with her boss about not complying with the openness the team is attempting to practice. She sees her boss as actually slowing down progress since he seems to not have a “heart”.

When we stepped back together to look at the situations where this “heartlessness” seems to be present, I asked her to be curious about what her boss may be afraid of.

In each situation she described, we examined what may be present below the surface, we saw fear. Fear of being vulnerable, being hurt, being embarrassed, being judged and even being fully seen.

Hold vs. CarryAt one time or another we have all been in the position to help or support another person.

The more we care, the greater our desire to step in and do whatever is needed to alleviate the stress, pain or hardship of the one in need.

What I have seen happen many times, however (in my own experience as well as others), is that sometimes a sincere interest to help, followed by a variety of actions, turns out not to be helpful at all.

So what’s up with that?

In my perspective, instead of holding someone, giving support, comfort and love, including some physical acts of assistance, we can end up trying to carry their problem for them.

Whos Driving Your BusImagine this: Your life is a bus. It moves along the road of time. It may slow down for the turns in the road as they show up…some will be hard with sharp corners, others, gradual and easy.

Your bus can go fast if you choose to lean on the gas but if you don’t wear a seatbelt you may get knocked about hitting bumps and even pot holes at times.

Your bus, as with all buses on the road, will also eventually stop.

Ideally, you are always at the wheel, the driver. . . the one that chooses the direction, selects who gets picked up to accompany you on your trip and even what fuel you put into the tank.

Courage Within EncouragementAfter doing an online self assessment, I was noted to have scored high in the category of encouragement. When I paused to think about my high appreciation for hearing kind, compassionate and encouraging words from those that love me, I realized that encouragement not only feels good to me, it also gives me courage. This may have already occurred to you, but prior to this ah-haaa, I never noticed the word “courage” was within “encouragement”.

Although I can be a bit of a risk taker and love surprises, and even an occasional challenge, what I know about myself is if I don’t have encouragement, the chances I’ll be successful are slimmer.
