New Year New WayThe first day of January can be a very powerful day. Many of us see it as an opportunity to set ourselves on a better course than the previous year and finally get what we want in life. Unfortunately, It can also be a time where we make a lot of promises to ourselves and then forget about them in a week or so and go back to feeling like slugs that cannot keep a commitment.

So why is it that the feel of this brand new, shiny new year that holds so much promise can disappear instantly or gradually, (depending on our individual style)?

As I consider this question, one thing that comes to mind is that we often make promises to ourselves that come from a place outside ourselves.

Service Through LoveMy husband and I attended a wedding yesterday and part of the ceremony was a foot washing.

First the groom sat at his wife’s feet, poured water into a bowl, and then proceeded to wash her feet. When completed, she knelt before him and did the same.

As this ceremony was going on, the minister described how the act signified how this couple will be in service to one another.

It struck me as I watched that it is not only in marriages that this kind of expression of love is carried out, it is in all walks and ways of life and in all relationships.

Self Abuse in DisguiseI typically talk about, read about and write about self-respect, self-love, and self-care and it is because of that history that I find it perplexing why I continue to abuse myself.

What has come to my realization is that certain foods are not handled well by my body and although my clues have been mounting and symptoms have been persistent, I have ignored the warnings and have eaten these foods anyway. I have now come to the conclusion that this constitutes self-abuse.

As I awoke this morning, feeling a cramping discomfort in my abdomen (which happened to be identical of that which I experienced yesterday), and realizing I ate the same thing (whole wheat pasta) two evenings in a row, I am beginning to wake up.

Opening the Space for LearningThere seems to be a difference of opinion regarding the best and most effective way to teach, lead or manage people. Many believe that in order to be honest and direct you need not take another’s feelings into account. Others believe that an honest critique can be given without threat of humiliation to the recipient. In fact, it can be done in a way that actually brings out the best in each individual.

About 40 years ago, I had the privilege to be a student in a Psychology course where I learned this lesson first hand. Interestingly, the professor happened to be my husband. It was a continuing education evening class, filled almost completely with mature/non-tradional students, many of which had not been in a classroom setting for 30-40 years.
